CPU Market Emerges as New AI Battleground as Inference Workloads Reshape Data Centers

The explosive growth of AI inference workloads is triggering a fundamental power shift in data center architecture, elevating CPUs from supporting actors to critical infrastructure as companies race to deploy autonomous AI agents at scale.
Arm unveiled its AGI CPU and announced partnerships with OpenAI and Meta, marking a strategic pivot for the company that has long operated as a behind-the-scenes chip architect collecting royalties. The new processor targets energy efficiency and memory constraints in AI data centers, positioning Arm to capture a share of what it estimates as a $1.5 trillion AI market opportunity.
Yet Arm faces formidable obstacles. Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya warned the CPU market is "getting very crowded," with AMD, Nvidia, and Intel fielding more established product lines and customer relationships. Both Meta and OpenAI maintain partnerships with AMD and Nvidia, potentially limiting Arm's market entry. Arya noted that AI's growth paradoxically threatens Arm's core smartphone business through memory supply constraints.
The competitive dynamics reflect a broader architectural evolution. "Inference requires constant data movement, pre-processing, and post-processing. These tasks are handled by CPUs," according to analysis published by Forbes. "As inference volume grows, the bottleneck shifts from raw compute to data orchestration, and the sheer number of CPUs needed to feed data to accelerators is skyrocketing."
Intel stands to benefit from its x86 software ecosystem, as most enterprise applications remain natively optimized for Intel architecture. For smaller models under 20 billion parameters used in document summarization or search, high-end CPUs like Intel Xeon 6 often prove more cost-effective than dedicated GPUs. AMD has gained server market share with its high-core-count EPYC "Turin" processors, while Nvidia is deploying its own ARM-based "Vera" CPUs to create tightly integrated systems.
The rise of agentic AI—autonomous systems capable of planning, reasoning, and executing multi-step workflows—is accelerating demand for CPU-centric architectures. "AI has entered the production era. Intelligence is now generated in real time—and enterprises need systems built for that scale," said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, announcing Lenovo partnerships for AI inferencing platforms.
Lenovo is deploying the NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 platform, delivering fully liquid-cooled, rack-scale AI systems that achieve up to 10x higher throughput and up to 10x lower cost per token compared to previous generations. The systems explicitly use high-performance CPUs to manage memory access and data orchestration while offloading security to dedicated Data Processing Units.
