E-Commerce Platforms Race to Embed AI Discovery as Search Shifts to Chatbots
Businesses deploy tools to surface products in generative AI platforms like ChatGPT and Perplexity, while Indian IT firms create dedicated AI leadership roles to capture automation revenue.

E-commerce technology providers are launching specialized tools designed to help businesses appear in results generated by ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity, marking a strategic shift as product discovery migrates from traditional search engines to conversational AI platforms.
Durable, an AI business builder, introduced Discoverability, a feature that measures how findable a business is across generative AI channels, provides guided suggestions to improve rankings, and benchmarks visibility against competitors. Swyft Filings released an OpenAI app enabling entrepreneurs to form LLCs and register corporations directly inside ChatGPT, leveraging real-time AI guidance for business formation tasks. E-commerce platform Miva embedded an AI reporting assistant in its 26 R1 update, allowing merchants to query store data, analyze conversion rates, and identify top products using natural-language prompts without exporting reports or building dashboards.
The push to optimize for AI-driven discovery reflects a broader recalibration of digital commerce infrastructure. Pepper, a foodservice technology provider, developed a prospect finder tool in partnership with Yelp that uses AI to analyze restaurant menus and automatically generate tailored order guides with price quotes—work that previously required hours of manual effort by sales representatives. The tool enables distributors to build coordinated campaigns with suppliers, enroll in ad programs, and earn revenue through keyword searches and pay-per-click banner ads.
"As agentic AI raises the stakes, operating without that understanding is no longer a limitation—it's a liability," said Dr. Dale Skeen, co-founder and CTO of Vitria Technology, whose AIOps platform is achieving 95 percent-plus incident resolution rates in large networks.
(Gap Inc. launched GapGPT in February, an internal portal granting employees access to multiple large language models, illustrating how consumer-facing brands are simultaneously deploying AI for internal operations and customer engagement.)
India's IT services sector is responding with a leadership reset. At least five of the country's top ten firms—including Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro, LTM, and Persistent Systems—introduced or expanded AI-focused roles over the past year, outpacing the previous two years combined. "As AI becomes more widespread, there will be an increasing need to make and sell AI-specific proposals to clients," said Pramod Gubbi, founder of Marcellus Investment Managers. New chief AI roles, dedicated business units, and AI-linked revenue disclosures signal a structural shift as the sector positions for growth in the automation era.
The convergence of AI-native commerce tools and enterprise reorganization underscores a transition from probabilistic recommendation engines to knowledge-driven, autonomous systems capable of reasoning across complex workflows and acting with precision.
